25 Books for 2014: Part Un
Aiming a bit low with my reading challenge this year since I'll be in med school.
1. PUSH by Sapphire - 5/5
I love the fact that the book was written the way Precious Jones was supposed to think/write as an illiterate. As the story goes on we can see the progress Precious has made with her education. This book just tore my soul to pieces. I still don't have the courage to watch the movie.
2. The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell - 5/5
The kilig I felt for Carrie and Sebastian in the series was intensified after I read the book. With that the rest of the emotions I felt were intensified as well, Sebastian is such an a-hole in the book though.
3. In My Skin: A Memoir by Kate Holden - 5/5
You can't help but root for Holden all the way through. This felt raw to me which makes it more poignant and insightful as well. An awesome memoir of a woman who turned to prostitution to fund her heroin addiction.
4. This Star Won't Go Out by Esther Earl - 5/5
I can't help but cry loads while reading this book. It amazes me how much of a trooper Esther was despite her heartbreaking battle with cancer was. She has lived such a happy life. This girl's life has inspired John Green to write The Fault In Our Stars.
5. Lipstick Jungle by Candace Bushnell - 5/5
I loved the fact that Candace Bushnell has given both women and men an equal voice despite the strong (ish) feminism vibe that emanates from the book. Lots of food for thought on life, career, love, and family.
6. And That's When It Fell Off In My Hand by Louise Rennison - 5/5
Ahhh.. Georgia my home girl has got a new man in her life, the hottie Italian, Masimo. Follow her hilarious journey as she weaves through her new found romance while the SG is miles away in Kiwi-a-go-go-land.
7. The Colour Of Tea by Hannah Tuncliffe - 4/5
Peaceful read yet had a few undertones of chaos lurking beneath Grace and Pete's married life. Set in Macau, read on as Grace tries to build a home (and family?) with the people she's met as she is starting her life over after finding out she can't bear a child.
8. Project Paris by Lisa Barham - 4/5
Great chick lit. A very light and fun read for young girls or young girls at heart.
9. Barrel Fever by David Sedaris - 5/5
I just love Sedaris' humor. The sarcasm and the way he calls people out because of their moments of absurdity in life. I just love a great compilation of short stories and essays. A personal favorite would be the "The Last You'll Hear From Me."
10. Ecstasy by Irvine Welsh - 4/5
A bit difficult to read because of the way it's written... it's like the accent was incorporated into the book. But it was funny and interesting. Three tales of chemical romance.
11. Celebrity Shopper by Carmen Reid - 3/5
Wedged a chick lit in between reading books with extremely heavy themes. I can't help but liken Annie Valentine with the Ultimate Shopper's (love this show) host, Brix Smith-Start. I don't know, she just fits the character so well.
12. The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood - 5/5
I have found my author. Margaret Atwood is a genius. I love this book so so so much. It requires all of your focus since this is an intellectual read with all the layers and the constant switch of perspective from science fiction to post World War to the musings of Laura Chase-Griffen. Must read!!!
13. The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin - 5/5
Wow oh wow... Martin actually wrote a children's book. It took me an hour to finish reading this. I can't help but feel that this is a chapter from one of the A Song of Fire and Ice books. Less morbid though.
14. Toxicology by Jessica Hagedorn - 3/5
Hagedorn's perspective is unique matched with her great humor, interesting combination. One thing though, I don't quite get the ending? Enlighten me please.
15. Everyday by David Levithan - 4/5
This is such a well written book. But extremely sad. I have a lot of questions left unanswered though. I feel like A's character is an open question but I think that's how Levithan wants it anyway???
